Kings of Leon Concert

July 26th, 2010 by Tlam

Rock group Kings of Leon were performing in St. Louis at the Verizon Amphitheatre.  The problem was they only performed three songs and then walked off the stage and cancelled the show!  Why?  Because pigeons were pooping on them!  One of the band members was pooed in the face and on both arms in just a few minutes time.  The pigeons were just hanging around up in the rafters above the stage.

Guess management of the venue will need to figure out how to keep the pigeons from hanging out up in the rafters for future events.  But then again, maybe the performance wasn’t that good and the pigeons felt it was their duty to drop the hint.

Amanda Bynes Retiring

June 21st, 2010 by Tlam

I guess 24 is the 62!  Have you ever heard of anyone retiring at the age of 21?  Amanda Bynes tweeted to her followers over the weekend that she no longer loves acting and its not as fun as it may seem, so she’s going to retire.  So now what is she going to do?  lol

At one time she was named the 5th highest paid celebrity under the age of 21.  She may not have enjoyed all the aspects of her job, but she was certainly getting paid well to do it.  Couldn’t have been that rough.

Now that she’s quit and money stops coming in…chances are within five years if she’s offered a role…she’ll re-think the retirement thing.

I wonder what Betty White, at the age of 88, thinks of this?

Bret Michaels the Next Simon?

June 1st, 2010 by Tlam

When I came into work this morning the big story was Bret Michaels could possibly take Simon’s job next season on Idol.  I’m just a little burnt out on Bret at the moment.

It is very unfortunate about all the health problems he’s endured in the last 8 weeks.  He is extremely lucky to have walked out of that hospital.  He’s not out of the clear either.  He still has to undergo heart surgury later this year.  I’m not sure taking gig like replacing Simon on American Idol is such a good idea for him right now.

I’ve also come to the conclusion, no matter who replaces Simon, I probably won’t like him or her.  The show just isn’t going to be the same.  Bret Michaels has been successful as the frontman for Poison, but I just don’t see him being the guy guiding America to the next American Idol.  Do you?

Let’s hope Donald Trump keeps him busy as the Celebrity Apprentice!

Will it be Crystal or Lee?

May 20th, 2010 by Tlam

Its been a tough season on Idol, the talent just wasn’t there and perhaps maybe America is finally getting bored with the show.  However, now that we’re down to the end, the finale is going to be exciting!

I’d say Crystal has done very well on the show.  She’s been relatively consistent each week and is very comfortable on stage.  Plus she has a unique sound that fits her personality.  Lee has been fun to watch, he really has blossomed from the beginning.  He actually reminds me of David Cook.

This whole time if I had to pick a winner, I’d put my money on Crystal.  But after Lee’s performance this past week, and how Simon was more or less coaching America to vote for him, I think Lee could come out on top.

Speaking of Simon…this is it…his final show is coming up.  I don’t know if I’ll be watching next season.  Just like the Price Is Right without Bob Barker…and you all know my thoughts on that.  lol

Every 15 Minutes!

April 25th, 2010 by Tlam
Did you know every 15 minutes, someone dies in an alchohol related car accident?  That statistic is unreal.  It is so important to get the message to young people how dangerous it is.  Which is why the program “Every 15 Minutes” was created, a program for schools to teach students the tragedy and consequences of drinking and driving.

With this weekend being prom in Spencer, the “Every 15 Minutes” program was done at the High School.  Volunteers worked for literally ten months lining up the people, resources and funding to make possible.  All for the sole purpose of sending a one message to students…DON”T DRINK AND DRIVE!  Laura Manwarren and Amy Sievers were the head coordinators and did a super job.  They made arrangements with everyone…the hospital, law enforcement, fire department, the school, funeral home, parents, volunteers, etc…to pull this off.

How the program works is a mock alcohol-related car accident is staged next to the school and the entire student body is there to witness what happens.  Everthing from the police arriving on scene…ambulance crews tending to the wounded…police questioning the drunk driver leading to an arrest…and then the hearse coming at the end to take away the one who is killed.  Believe me, its quite a scene.  Then during the day, every 15 minutes the Grim Reaper goes into a classroom and selects a student to be dead, that student then has to walk around wearing white makeup and must not talk or communicate with no one.  My role in the program was to read the obituaries of the students in front of the class after the Grim Reaper leaves.  Reading obituaries in front of people every 15 minutes  was something I’ve never experienced before.   Later in the day there was an ER scene where the second student doesn’t survive their injuries and there is a courtroom scene where the drunk driver is convicted.

The following morning a funeral service was held for the two students who died…and was very emotional.  When I say funeral, I mean a real funeral, caskets, flowers, tombstones, ministers, everything.  I don’t think the students were at all prepared for how real this would be out to be.

Some would maybe argue that is was taken a little too far.  But I disagree.  Seems like in today’s society as we know it, anytime you want to send a message or make a point, you really really have to hit home to make an impact.  This is the goal of Every 15 Minutes.  To make a clear statement that its NOT ok to drink and drive.  If one life has been saved after watching this program, then the program has done its job.

I would like to say a special thank you to Laura and Amy for asking me to be part of the committee.  I enjoyed working with them and everyone else and this is something I will never forget.  Thank you for bringing this project to Spencer Schools!

The Best Show I’ve Ever Seen!

April 11th, 2010 by Tlam

Thursday night in Omaha I had the chance to see the greatest show I’ve ever seen!  As some of you know, I am a country music fan, I saw Lee Ann Womack, Reba and George Strait all in one concert!  This was a special tour, because when in one night do you get to see the Queen and King of country music?  You might get to on a rare television special, but not two full concerts in one night  live in person.

I’ve seen many great concerts over the years…people like Garth, Elton, Cher, Shania, Billy Joel, Neil Diamond, and so on.  This show topped them all!  Both Reba and George sounded exactly like they do on digitally mastered cd, which is not always the case when you see someone perform live.  Reba is a master at playing to the crowd, and the has the hits to back it up.  George isn’t one to move around on stage, but his voice hits every note in every one of his songs and makes it seem effortless.  He’s just a down to earth guy that has a lot of number one songs…and on occasion he enjoys singing them for a crowd.  That’s how he comes accross.

Wow!  What a show!

2010 Polar Plunge April 17th!

March 24th, 2010 by Tlam

As you probably heard on the radio, we’re gearing up for the 2nd annual Clay County Polar Plunge April 17th at Scharberg Park.  Last year’s event was huge, never did I think we’d raise over $25,000!!!  Northwest Iowa did an awesome job for Special Olympics of Iowa!

So lets do it again!  KICD/Lite 104.9 will be having a team again.  This year we’ll be known as the “Radio Waves!”  Yes I’ll be part of the team rasing money, but I won’t be able to officially take the plunge, as I will be serving as the emcee for the event.  Surely you understand that there’s no way I can jump into the water with a mircophone in my hand.  So I will stay on the beach.  lol  I will be an official “Chicken Plunger” this year.

However, I’ll make a deal with you.  If I receive $500 or more in donations, I’ll take the plunge at the end.  So if you are determined to see me plunge into the lake, you click below to donate.  See you at the Plunge April 17th!

March 16th, 2010 by Tlam

Normally I try not to ask for much, but this time I need your help getting out of jail.  On March 24th I’ll be serving time raising money for the MDA…all money raised benefits Jerry’s Kids!  Whether is $1 or $10, whatever you’re comfortable giving will make a difference.

I know there are some of you that would maybe rather donate to keep me in jail.  You can allocate your funds for the purpose also!  lol  Click on the link below for more information and to donate online…

Oscars Memorial

March 10th, 2010 by Tlam

On the big annual awards shows, like the Grammys, Emmys & the Oscars, its always fun to watch the memorial tributes to those that have past within the year.  It really is a great way to pay to tribute to those who were so well known and respected in the arts.

However, I feel its important to remember everyone and not leave anyone out.  At this year’s Academy Awards, there were some significant names of people who have died that were not included in the memorial tribute.  Names like Bea Arthur, Farrah Fawcett and Ed McMahon.  All three were staples in television and also appeared in movies.  They maybe never won an Oscar, but don’t you think they deserved to be recognized?  Even Michael Jackson was recognized in the tribute.  He really wasn’t even an actor.

The Executive Director of the show said “its the single most troubling element of the show every year.  Because more people die each year than can possibly be included in the segment.”  That may be true, so why not change it.  The show already runs a good three hours, what would another two minutes be to pay tribute to the legends we’ve lost.  I don’t think anyone would argue this.
